Your portrait is purely aesthetic - try to pick one that matches your race/class combination and that you find appealing. Your race affects your ability scores and will give you a list of abilities. Gender has no effect on your character's abilities, but will affect how other people treat you in the game, be they NPC or PC. The first four things that you will have to do is pick your character's gender, race, class and portrait. After this run through I will go through the basics about character creation in the hopes of extending what is said in the manual. This is intended as an example, of what kind of preparation can be done if you are really determined to create a unique character. Let me illustrate to you how the character creation process works, and my rationale for why I chose everything the way I did. My main character at this game is Raiksha Nightblade, a human rogue. With the added addition of customizable adventure modules, there is much offered by the game, so making a good character to start with is a good idea. This particular game takes it a lot further, making it very close to designing a real pen and paper character, without all the hassle of checking everything over manually. Like most other Dungeons and Dragons games, you can fully customize your main character. There's also the cinematic dialogue style, but I don't care for that.=Neverwinter Nights is a very imaginative game. Optionally, you can choose which of your party members speaks the dialogue.

Since story is very important to you, I think you'd find the NWN2 UI better for your purposes, since mods exist to give it large dialogue boxes with much larger fonts, much easier to read than the one in NWN1. There are more fundamental differences than just graphics or which rule revision they use, such as party control. I'll trade power and flexibility for ease any day, but I do think it's easier to perform certain tasks in it anyway, such as making things happen during conversations with the use of standard parameterised scripts, such that you don't need to create a new script every time you want to unlock a door or cause someone to attack, etc.Īdditionally, if it matters, it would be easier to stand out with NWN2, since fewer modules are released for it.īob's advice is good that you should play a module or two from each game to see how the games actually play. I most certainly recommend the NWN2 toolset. Which would you suggest for a total newbie? Which is easier to get started with? What has your experience been with each toolset? I am currently leaning towards NWN 1 just based on stuff from the /r/neverwinternights subreddit. I own all the games above and their respective DLC / Expansions.
To help with my goal of creating interactive stories, I decided to start small: by creating modules/mods for existing games, rather then trying to reinvent the wheel and create my own game system / engine (like using Unity 3D or Construct 2 or GameMaker ect) Well that and I am the only one who can seemingly learn all the rules needed haha. Its why I have always been the DM for my groups DND games for the past 10ish years. I have written a few short stories here and there, but my real want is to create a piece of interactive fiction so that others can experience my stories in my way.

However, at the same time I find myself wanting to learn in small incremental steps, and really, my personal passion is less about creating systems and code but more about the world, lore, and stories. I have always wanted to create stories and games. OH! I also love VGM and Video Game cover bands (The Protomen, Random Encounter, The Megas, The NESkimos, GIMMICK!, The Returners, stuff like that).
